The Senate’s Joint Committee on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force convened behind closed doors on Wednesday to address the recent tragedy in Okuoma community, Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, where 17 officers and troops of the Nigerian Army lost their lives. This development prompted intensified efforts by troops to apprehend the perpetrators.
Reports indicated that the victims, comprising four military officers and 13 soldiers, were on a peacekeeping mission in Okuoma community when they were ambushed and killed by assailants last Thursday.
In attendance at the meeting were the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla.
During the meeting, which commenced at 3:42 pm, the lawmakers emphasized the urgency of investigating the incident. The Senate, during its previous plenary session, had tasked the joint committee with probing the killings and urged the government to ensure the perpetrators are swiftly brought to justice.
Senator Ahmad Lawan, who chairs the Joint Committee and also leads the Senate Committee on Defence, called for a moment of silence to honor the fallen soldiers before the meeting commenced. In his remarks, Senator Lawan condemned the attack as barbaric and stressed the imperative of prioritizing national security above all else.
He reiterated the Senate’s commitment to supporting the Armed Forces and called upon citizens to cooperate by providing relevant information to aid in apprehending those responsible for such acts of violence.
