Senate Receives National Council Of Traditional Rulers, Discusses Constitutional Roles For Monarchs

The Senate leadership had a meeting on Monday with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria, led by the Etsu Nupe, His Royal Highness Yahaya Abubakar, representing the Sultan of Sokoto, His Royal Highness Sa’ad Abubakar. During the meeting, Abubakar formally congratulated Senate President Godswill Akpabio on his emergence as the President of the Senate.

Abubakar pointed out that the 1999 Constitution failed to assign specific roles to traditional rulers, despite their crucial contributions in stabilizing society and maintaining national unity.
He mentioned that previous efforts to rectify this issue, including one during the 9th National Assembly, did not succeed in getting the required votes in the Senate.
In response, Akpabio assured the traditional rulers that the Senate would consider assigning constitutional roles to them in the next Constitution amendment, to give them a sense of belonging.
He acknowledged the significant roles traditional rulers play in governance, especially in ensuring the security of lives and property at the grassroots level.
Akpabio expressed his belief that engaging traditional rulers constitutionally in governance could help address the myriad security challenges facing the country.
