Akpoti-Uduaghan was suspended on March 6, 2025, following a heated exchange during plenary over her refusal to switch seats. She had anticipated a return to the Senate on September 6, upon completion of her suspension.

However, with the Senate now on break until September 23, her return will be delayed, prompting renewed criticism. Speaking to journalists, Akpoti-Uduaghan described her suspension as “fraudulent” and “contemptuous,” vowing to escalate the matter legally.

“Even the suspension ab initio was fraudulent; the document was faulty,” she said.
“I will be meeting with my legal team to pursue this at the appellate court. I am a law-abiding citizen.”

She also accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of acting unilaterally in enforcing the suspension, suggesting he had exceeded his constitutional authority.

Recess Announcement and Oversight Mandate

Announcing the adjournment, Senate President Akpabio explained that the recess aligns with the National Assembly’s legislative calendar and mirrors a similar break already commenced by the House of Representatives.

“We’ve started a new legislative year that runs until next June. This break allows us to carry out crucial oversight responsibilities,” he said on the Senate floor.

Although plenary is paused, Akpabio directed all standing committees to continue their assignments, emphasizing the importance of oversight visits.

“You’re moving from plenary, not from work. Members should travel across the country—Sokoto, everywhere—to monitor road repairs and other federal projects,” he added.
“Upon resumption, every committee must submit its report.”

He specifically highlighted the roles of the Diaspora Committee, Interior Committee, and Reparation Committee, urging them to undertake prison inspections and other field activities during the recess.

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele praised lawmakers for their dedication and moved that all pending legislative matters be deferred until the next session—an action unanimously adopted.

In a somber moment, Akpabio also announced the death of Professor Janet Plang, wife of Senator Diket Plang, and informed senators that travel arrangements had been made for her funeral in Plateau State. A chartered flight is scheduled to depart Abuja at 8:00 a.m. on Friday.
