The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, have strongly criticized the Senate for preventing Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from resuming her legislative duties after completing her suspension.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Both organisations described the Senate’s stance as unjust, undemocratic, and a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement signed by its president, Joe Ajaero, the NLC noted that the decision had left the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District without proper representation, despite valid court rulings in favour of the senator.

“The continued barring of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from carrying out her constitutional mandate denies her constituents their rights and undermines respect for the rule of law,” the statement read.

The NLC further argued that using ongoing litigation as justification for the delay was inconsistent with democratic accountability and amounted to disenfranchising an entire senatorial district. It also warned that the labour movement might mobilise nationwide action if the issue is not resolved in line with democratic norms.

Afenifere: ‘Decision unjustifiable after suspension’
Similarly, Afenifere’s Secretary-General, Sola Ebiseni, speaking in Akure, described the Senate’s position as a setback to democratic governance.

He stressed that the expiration of Akpoti-Uduaghan’s six-month suspension on September 6 made any legal barriers to her resumption “untenable.”

“It is difficult to still regard the matter as sub judice after the suspension has lapsed,” Ebiseni argued.

He warned that the Senate, as the country’s highest legislative chamber, must avoid setting a precedent that could embolden state assemblies to undermine constitutional governance.

“The refusal to allow her resumption is unfair, not only to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan but also to her constituents, who deserve full representation,” he added.

Both the NLC and Afenifere urged the Senate leadership to reverse its decision in the interest of justice, democracy, and national stability.
