The victims, identified as Busayo Adegoke John-Paul and her 12-year-old twin sons, were abducted in the early hours of Wednesday in the Elewura-Challenge area of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
The rescue operation, conducted on Saturday night in the Ayegun area of Oluyole Local Government Area, led to the arrest of four suspected kidnappers. Two others were killed during a gun battle with security operatives, while several fleeing suspects reportedly sustained gunshot injuries.
Firearms, including a pump-action shotgun, were recovered from the scene.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Oluwagbemiga Abimbola, the operation was made possible through intelligence gathering and technical surveillance, which enabled operatives to trace the victims to a three-bedroom bungalow allegedly used as a detention facility.
“After the incident on June 3, we deployed technical intelligence, which guided the follow-up operation that led to this breakthrough,” Abimbola said.
He explained that the victims were taken from the city and transported to the location to conceal their whereabouts.
The police commissioner also expressed concern that suspicious movements around the property had gone unreported, despite its location within a residential area.
“People had observed unusual activities at the premises, yet no one reported them,” he said.
He urged residents to cooperate more closely with security agencies, stressing the importance of timely information sharing.
“If you see something, say something. Early reporting could have led to their arrest sooner,” he added.
When asked whether the abduction might be politically motivated due to Adelabu’s profile, Abimbola said investigations were still ongoing.
“We are still investigating,” he noted.
The commissioner also stated that the government would determine the fate of the property allegedly used by the kidnappers.
The police command confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects and dismantle the wider criminal network behind the abduction.
