The 31-year-old midfielder, who plays for Guangxi Pingguo, was rushed to hospital after crashing head-first into an LED advertising board during Sunday’s clash. The incident occurred when Chongqing Tonglianglong’s Zhang Zhixiong shoved him from behind — an action that earned the opposing player only a yellow card.
In a statement released Monday, Guangxi Pingguo confirmed that Asamoah suffered multiple neck fractures and severe nerve damage, with doctors warning that he is at risk of high-level paraplegia — a condition that could cause paralysis and loss of sensation in the lower body.
The club added that Asamoah had undergone successful surgery and is currently in stable condition, noting that updates on his recovery will be provided after further medical evaluations.
The horrific incident has triggered an outpouring of concern and support from fans and fellow footballers across Africa and beyond. Messages of solidarity have flooded in for the former Sint-Truiden and KAS Eupen midfielder.
Asamoah began his professional career in Belgium, spending nearly a decade in the Pro League before joining Guangxi Pingguo in 2024. Since making his international debut in 2019, he has earned six caps for the Togo national team.
The accident comes just weeks after the tragic death of former Arsenal academy striker Billy Vigar, who died from a severe brain injury sustained while playing for Chichester City in England’s Isthmian League Premier Division.
