Milan had already struck an agreement with Bayer Leverkusen for a deal valued at €5 million on loan with an option to buy for €24 million. However, concerns over Boniface’s long-term fitness led the Rossoneri to abandon the move.

Milan sporting director Igli Tare acknowledged the club’s position, saying:
“We were aware of his previous issues and are evaluating everything carefully regarding his health and fitness. His qualities are undeniable, but we must make the right decision for the club in this situation.”

Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes also confirmed the breakdown, telling BILD:
“If he returns to Leverkusen, then the Milan deal is finished. That’s no big secret.”

Italian reports suggest that Milan were especially wary of the 24-year-old Nigerian’s injury history. Boniface previously suffered two cruciate ligament injuries on the same knee during his spell at Bodo/Glimt and has endured recurring muscle setbacks since joining the Bundesliga, sidelining him for much of the last two seasons.
