This development follows the reinstatement of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos Assembly.

“The initial agreement was for Mojisola Meranda to step down today, followed by Obasa’s resignation on Wednesday, allowing a lawmaker from Lagos West to emerge as Speaker. Anything less than this undermines the efforts of party leaders. No single person should dominate the 35 other lawmakers. It won’t be business as usual in this Assembly,” a source told Leadership.

On Monday, emotions ran high as lawmakers and Assembly staff openly wept when Meranda tendered her resignation, paving the way for Obasa’s return.

The crisis began on January 13 with Obasa’s removal, and during her 49-day tenure, Meranda was widely praised for her leadership. Many viewed her resignation as a step back towards autocratic rule within the Assembly.

Before stepping down, Meranda and Obasa met with fellow lawmakers in the presence of Lagos State Attorney General Lawal Pedro and Lagos APC Chairman Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi.

Following her resignation, Meranda was reappointed as Deputy Speaker, while Obasa was sworn in again as Speaker. Other leadership changes included:

• Hon. Sanni Okanlawon resigning as Deputy Chief Whip.
• Hon. Setonji David stepping down as Chief Whip but later re-elected as Deputy Chief Whip.
• Hon. Richard Kasunmu resuming as Deputy Majority Leader.
• Hon. Adewale Temitope retaining his position.
• Deputy Speaker Mojeed Fatai resigning and being elected as Chief Whip.

Meranda’s resignation aligns with the APC leadership’s directive, finalizing a decision reached in a Governance Advisory Council (GAC) meeting with House members on Sunday. Reports indicate that Obasa personally appealed for his reinstatement, pledging to adopt a more inclusive leadership approach.
