Abiodun, who had earlier been declared wanted by the EFCC over his suspected role in a fraudulent investment scheme involving more than $1 billion, reported to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja around 4 p.m. yesterday, accompanied by his legal representatives, family, and friends.
His surrender follows an earlier announcement by the EFCC naming him among four individuals wanted in connection with the CBEX scandal, which has left countless investors facing heavy financial losses.
The EFCC had previously identified Seyi Oloyede, Emmanuel Uko, Adefowora Oluwanisola, and Adefowora Abiodun Olaonipekun as wanted suspects.
This development comes after the Federal High Court in Abuja authorized the EFCC to arrest and detain six individuals allegedly involved in the promotion of the fraudulent CBEX platform. The order was issued by Justice Emeka Nwite last Thursday, following an ex parte application filed by EFCC counsel, Fadila Yusuf.
In granting the request, Justice Nwite said:
“I have listened to the submissions of the applicant’s counsel and reviewed the affidavit evidence and exhibits attached. I find merit in the application and hereby grant it as prayed.”
The six individuals listed in the court order are Adefowora Abiodun Olanipekun, Adefowora Oluwanisola, Emmanuel Uko, Seyi Oloyede, Avwerosuo Otorudo, and Chukwuebuka Ehirim.
Meanwhile, according to Daily Sun, Abiodun’s lawyer, Babatunde Busari, said his client willingly submitted to the EFCC to clear his name and counter the “false narratives” being circulated in the media regarding his alleged involvement in the CBEX fraud.
