A jury in Los Angeles deliberated on Friday, March 8, concluding that the singer was indeed subjected to sexual abuse during his teenage years by his former manager, Joby Harte.
The jury’s decision held Harte accountable for childhood sexual abuse, gender violence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Additionally, they imposed a substantial judgment, awarding Ricky $5.5 million in compensatory damages and an additional $1 million in punitive damages.
This ruling marks the culmination of a protracted legal process for Ricky, who initiated the lawsuit against Harte at the age of 20 in 2019. Allegations included grooming and assault that began when Ricky was only 12 years old.
Ricky rose to prominence after his appearance on season 3 of “The X Factor,” where he caught the attention of music mogul Simon Cowell and earned a spot in the group “Forever in Your Mind.” Prior to his music career, he also appeared in numerous episodes of the Disney Channel series “Best Friends Whenever.”
According to the lawsuit, Ricky described how his involvement in the entertainment industry took a sinister turn when Harte organized songwriting sessions that escalated into abusive situations. Ricky detailed instances where he was allegedly drugged and woke up in compromising situations on Harte’s bed. He also disclosed being coerced into sexual acts while underage. Fearful of jeopardizing his career, Ricky remained silent until confronting Harte with his mother and subsequently filing the lawsuit.
