Naija News reports that Haruna’s release came after the Nigerian Navy leadership made certain decisions regarding his case.
On Friday, Haruna and his wife appeared on a popular Abuja radio station to confirm his release from detention. The couple recounted the challenges they faced, revealing that they had been evicted from their barracks due to issues surrounding Haruna’s imprisonment.
Expressing her unwavering support, Haruna’s wife said, “I will stand by him no matter what. He has been released. We were forced out of the barracks, but my love for my husband remains unshaken.”
A senior officer at Naval headquarters, speaking to *Daily Trust*, confirmed that Haruna had been dismissed from the naval service, meaning he is no longer a member of Nigeria’s armed forces. However, the officer declined to comment on the claim that the couple had been evicted from their barracks.
Attempts by the media to get an official response were unsuccessful, as calls to the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, went unanswered. He also did not respond to a text message sent prior to the report’s publication.
Haruna’s wife, Hussaina Iliya, had previously accused the military of unjustly detaining her husband since 2018 during a radio broadcast. Shortly afterward, the Defence Headquarters denied ever arresting him. However, a video later surfaced showing Haruna resisting attempts to disarm him by military personnel, leading to several shots being fired.
Iliya also accused a senior military officer, Brig. Gen. A.S. Adamu, of ordering her husband’s detention and torture. Her claims gained widespread attention, prompting Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Christopher Musa and Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle to call for an investigation into the matter.
