According to Mr. Garba Adamu, the NAFDAC State Coordinator, the bakery was identified during a special raid conducted by agency officials. He stated to the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday, July 13, 2024, that the bakery was found to be using saccharine, an unregistered foreign sugar, alongside banned bromate in their production processes.

“We seized the items for destruction and have temporarily shut down the bakery until it complies with all regulatory standards and directives,” Adamu affirmed.

He emphasized that only fortified, registered sugar containing essential nutrients such as Vitamin A and micronutrients is permitted for sale and consumption in Nigeria. This policy, enforced by NAFDAC and other government agencies, aims to ensure consumers derive maximum nutritional benefits from food products.

Additionally, Adamu disclosed that six other bakeries in Sokoto State were penalized for poor hygiene during routine inspections led by Mr. Buhari Manzo and enforcement officers. He underscored the importance of monitoring bakeries to prevent the use of saccharine and other banned substances as substitutes for regulated ingredients.

Adamu cautioned food producers against utilizing adulterated, counterfeit, unregistered, or expired items, reiterating NAFDAC’s commitment to regular enforcement activities. He announced plans to extend these operations to local government areas as part of efforts to maintain high standards of food hygiene across the state.

The State Coordinator urged the public to remain vigilant against purchasing unregistered products and encouraged reporting of any suspicious practices or contamination incidents to NAFDAC for prompt action.
