Illegal immigration and escalating crime levels have emerged as pivotal political issues ahead of the general election, with opposition parties criticizing the government’s perceived inability to address these pressing concerns.
South Africa currently contends with one of the world’s highest per capita homicide rates during peacetime.
Police Minister Bheki Cele, speaking at a press conference in Pretoria, disclosed that 7,710 individuals fell victim to murder in the final quarter of 2023. The increase in murders by 2.1 percent compared to the preceding year has raised significant alarm.
While incidents of rape, particularly prevalent against women and children in South Africa, experienced a marginal decline of 1.7 percent, concerns persist regarding the majority of rapes occurring within victims’ residences. In the township of Inanda, notorious as the country’s rape capital, there were 20 fewer reported cases during the quarter.
Minister Cele emphasized the troubling trend of perpetrators being acquaintances or even family members of the victims, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to combat such crimes.
