The hosts struck early when Julián Quiñones capitalised on a defensive error in the ninth minute. The forward reacted quickest to a loose ball at the edge of the box and calmly slotted it past South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to give Mexico an early lead.

Mexico maintained sustained pressure and created several chances before halftime. Raúl Jiménez came close with a header, while Quiñones also hit the outside of the post as South Africa struggled to cope with the intensity.

Despite the pressure, South Africa created a few opportunities of their own. Lyle Foster missed a promising header, while defender Mbekezile Mbokazi forced a sharp save late in the first half.

The game shifted further in Mexico’s favour shortly after the restart when South Africa were reduced to ten men. Midfielder Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle, leaving his team under significant pressure.

Mexico made their advantage count and doubled their lead in the 67th minute. Roberto Alvarado delivered a precise cross into the area, and Raúl Jiménez rose highest to head home into the bottom corner for 2-0.

South Africa’s difficulties worsened in the closing stages when substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off after a VAR review in the 84th minute, leaving the African side with nine players.

Mexico also ended the match with ten men after defender César Montes received a straight red card in stoppage time for a reckless challenge, though it had no impact on the final result.

In front of 80,824 fans, Mexico comfortably managed the final minutes to seal all three points and make a strong start to their World Cup campaign.
