The clash marks a historic moment, as both nations meet in a World Cup opener for the second time, 16 years after their memorable 1-1 draw at the 2010 tournament in South Africa. It is the first time an opening fixture has been repeated in FIFA World Cup history.

Mexico head coach Javier Aguirre has selected experienced striker Raul Jimenez to spearhead the attack in a 4-3-3 formation, supported by Julian Quinones and Roberto Alvarado. With first-choice goalkeeper Luis Angel Malagon unavailable, Raul Rangel starts between the posts, while captain Cesar Montes partners Johan Vasquez in central defence.

For South Africa, coach Hugo Broos has opted for a more cautious 5-3-2 formation. Burnley striker Lyle Foster teams up with Iqraam Rayners in attack, while Teboho Mokoena, Jayden Adams and Yaya Sithole are tasked with controlling midfield. Captain Ronwen Williams starts in goal.

Mexico enter the tournament as favourites to finish top of Group A after an impressive run of form that has seen them win six of their last eight matches while recording six clean sheets. El Tri are also unbeaten in their last seven World Cup opening matches, winning five and drawing two since 1994.

Although Mexico hold the record for the most World Cup matches played without lifting the trophy, supporters remain optimistic following a strong run that has produced 15 goals and a solid defensive record.

South Africa, meanwhile, are making their first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010 and only their fourth appearance overall. Bafana Bafana secured qualification ahead of Nigeria in their group and surrendered the lead just once during the qualifying campaign.

However, Hugo Broos’ side come into the tournament seeking a turnaround in form after recording three draws and two defeats in their last five matches.

Mexico Starting XI: Raul Rangel; Israel Reyes, Cesar Montes, Johan Vasquez, Jesus Gallardo; Erik Lira; Alvaro Fidalgo, Bryan Gutierrez; Roberto Alvarado, Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones.

South Africa Starting XI: Ronwen Williams; Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Nkosinathi Sibisi, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Aubrey Modiba; Jayden Adams, Yaya Sithole, Teboho Mokoena; Lyle Foster, Iqraam Rayners.
