Yemi Cardoso, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), leads an 11-member Special Committee, as mandated by the Students Loans Act, comprising representatives from various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

The committee’s acting secretary is Akintunde Sawyerr.

During the session, Cardoso encouraged committee members to draw upon their diverse backgrounds to ensure the success of the program. He underscored that the initiative is a pivotal project under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, intended to benefit underprivileged Nigerians.

Committee Chairman Cardoso asserted that the scheme’s commencement will face no hindrances through the intensified engagement of various stakeholders.

NELFUND, established after the enactment of the Access to Higher Education Act 2023 (Students Loan Act) by President Tinubu on June 12, 2023, provides a legal framework for extending loans to financially disadvantaged or low-income Nigerians, covering their tuition fees.

The Act also aims to improve access to higher education for Nigerians, with President Tinubu advocating for the scheme’s expansion to include those pursuing vocational training.
