They expressed their dismay at the rise in semester fees from N65,000 to N240,000. Returning students who had expected to pay N65,000 will now pay N180,000, while new students are required to pay N240,000 in addition to other fees.
During the protest, students chanted, “We won’t agree, we won’t pay,” as they marched within the university premises.
The Students Union Government (SUG) President, Hammed Akinjetan, stated that it is the union’s responsibility to advocate for the students’ interests and that the fee increase is unjust and burdensome.
A statement signed by the SUG President and the Public Relations Officer, Olawale Olanrewaju, emphasized the importance of accessible education and encouraged students to unite and oppose the fee increment.
The university defended the fee increase, with TASUED Registrar, Chief Dapo Oke, explaining that it is a national phenomenon and that the increase is necessary due to the cost of running the institution.
He praised the students for their peaceful demonstration and assured that their concerns would be considered during consultations with the government.
Oke stressed the need for economic fees to maintain the quality of academic programs, staff salaries, and infrastructure, emphasizing that the fees charged are the bare minimum given existing market forces.
The university plans to engage in discussions with the Students Union Government and address the students’ complaints.
