According to security sources who spoke with Zagazola Makama, a convoy of four Niger Republic military gun trucks and a Toyota Jeep — led by Captain Salifou Mono — crossed into Mazanya Village in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, firing sporadically as they advanced. The heavily armed convoy caused panic among locals.
However, a combined team of Nigerian security forces — including troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, the police, DSS, and the Civilian Joint Task Force — swiftly located the intruding troops and escorted them back to the Danmasani Border. The Nigerien commander later issued an apology for the unapproved incursion and assured that it would not happen again.
Zagazola noted that the breach highlights the fragility of the Nigeria–Niger border, especially as jihadist movements intensify across the Sahel. While Nigeria has recently appointed new ambassadors to boost relations with neighboring countries, experts argue that more must be done to coordinate military activities along shared borders.
“With Nigeria’s Operation Farautar Bauchiya and Operation Fansan Yanma underway in the North-West, and Niger’s campaigns targeting ISGS, JNIM, and other Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, the need for structured and harmonized joint operations is urgent,” the report said.
It warned that poor coordination between the two countries’ security forces could lead to civilian harm, misinterpretations, or unintended clashes — as demonstrated in the Mazanya incident.
The report emphasized that clearer communication channels, shared intelligence, and coordinated border operations are essential, especially as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State-linked groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, continue to exploit poorly governed spaces stretching from southern Libya through Niger into northwestern Nigeria.
It added that Nigeria and Niger must urgently establish protocols for cross-border hot pursuit, joint patrols, and real-time intelligence sharing to avoid future incidents and enhance the regional fight against terrorism.
