Former Nigerian senator, Shehu Sani, has openly criticized Niger Delta militant leader, Asari Dokubo, for a controversial video that has gone viral. In the video, Dokubo claims he and his band of militants are working for the President, and anyone seeking the President’s downfall will be “smashed.” CONTINUE READING
The video, according to Bushradiogist, was reportedly filmed while Dokubo was addressing around 300 militants after his return from a pilgrimage to Mecca. The footage has sparked controversies among Nigerians, including supporters of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Some believe the controversial video and the purported allegiance of Dokubo and his group could yield positive results for the President.
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that the militants seen in the video have been relocated to Abuja and are currently residing in a hotel owned by a well-known politician. CONTINUE READING
In response to the controversial video, Shehu Sani called on President Tinubu to quell the potential menace that Dokubo might create. He voiced his concern through a tweet: “I don’t know if the trending video is real or fake; but in any case, President Tinubu must not directly or indirectly allow or encourage the rise of state-backed private armed militia. They are viruses for the destruction of any country. A fragile country like ours doesn’t need a private army.”
Sani reinforced that Nigeria’s armed forces, police, and other security agencies have the experience, capacity, and competence to provide all the necessary protection the President and the Government needs, thus negating the need for any private militia.
This video and the consequent reactions come on the heels of previous controversial videos by Asari Dokubo, where he has been seen threatening anti-Tinubu politicians and Nigerians in the South-East. As this situation unfolds, it further escalates the ongoing discussions on the role of private militias in Nigerian politics.
