This Crisis Is Not Helping Rivers’ – Lawyer Reacts To Fubara Saga
Legal practitioner Obed Agu has expressed concern over the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, saying it is negatively affecting governance.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Arise Television on Friday, Agu said it was unfortunate that despite President Bola Tinubu’s political intervention to resolve the crisis, the Rivers State House of Assembly has continued with impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
He noted that while the courts cannot prevent any arm of government from carrying out its constitutional duties, they still retain the authority to review proceedings and issue appropriate orders when necessary.
“I want to add my voice to those of many Nigerians calling for a political solution to the situation in Rivers State,” Agu said. “It is troubling that even after the President’s efforts to resolve the crisis, the House of Assembly continues with impeachment proceedings. This development is not helping governance in the state.
“Although our Constitution clearly establishes the separation of powers among the executive, legislature, and judiciary, it also provides for checks and balances. While the courts cannot stop any arm of government from performing its constitutional responsibilities, they can review actions taken and issue orders where appropriate. That is precisely what the High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has done.”
