On June 14, 2023, the federal government announced that it had taken the necessary steps to ensure the initiation of the student loan scheme between September and October 2023.
Andrew David Adejo, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, revealed that President Bola Tinubu had authorized a committee composed of various ministries and agencies to oversee the realization of the Students Loan Bill.
However, with only a few days remaining and no visible progress in this regard, students nationwide are urging the government to cease delaying the implementation of the loan program and promptly open the application portal.
The Student Loan Bill, introduced by the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, is designed to offer interest-free loans to financially disadvantaged Nigerian students.
The legislation is aimed at providing accessible higher education to underprivileged Nigerians through interest-free loans from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund, according to the permanent secretary.
