Tick-Tock For Niger’s Military: ECOWAS Led By President Tinubu Issues One-Week Ultimatum for Bazoum’s Reinstatement!

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) heads of state and government convened an extraordinary summit on the socio-political situation in Niger on Sunday, July 30 in Abuja. The summit’s final communiqué, read by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Touray, rejected any form of alleged resignation by President Bazoum and recognized him as the only President elected and acknowledged by ECOWAS, the African Union, and the international community. The leaders stated, “Only official acts of President Bazoum or his duly-mandated officials will be recognized by ECOWAS.”

The leaders expressed strong condemnation of the attempted overthrow of Niger’s constitutional order and the illegal detention of President Bazoum, his family members, and government members. They demanded a complete restoration of constitutional order in Niger, treating President Mohamed Bazoum’s unlawful detention as a hostage situation, and holding the authors of the attempted coup solely responsible for his safety and security, as well as that of his family and government. ECOWAS leaders warned they would resort to all necessary measures to restore constitutional order in Niger, including the potential use of force, if their demands were not met within one week. “The Chiefs of Defence staff of ECOWAS are to meet immediately,” the leaders said.

The leaders also announced immediate sanctions on Niger, including the closure of land and air borders between ECOWAS countries and Niger, establishing a no-fly zone on all commercial flights to and from Niger, and suspending all commercial and financial transactions between ECOWAS Member States and Niger. Furthermore, assets of the Republic of Niger in the ECOWAS Central Bank, Niger state enterprises, and parastatals in commercial banks will be frozen.

They also imposed travel bans and asset freezes on the military officials involved in the coup attempt, their family members, and any civilians who agreed to participate in any institution or government established by these military officials.

President Tinubu, in his closing remarks to the Summit, thanked fellow leaders, Moussa Faki Mahamat, the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office in West Africa and the Sahel, Leonardo Santos Simaõ, for their active engagement and invaluable contributions to the discussions. He stressed, “We will stand with our people in freedom and our commitment to the rule of law and not the barrel of a gun. Africa has come of age. We reject coup and interruption to constitutional order.”
