The Catholic Bishops of the Owerri Ecclesiastical Province expressed concern over the removal of the petroleum subsidy, naira scarcity, and the declining currency value, heightening the cost of living. They emphasized the need for improved security and opposed the blessing of homosexual or same-sex marriages.
The Chariah Council urged the President to expedite actions to alleviate the economic challenges resulting from the government’s decisions and address insecurity. Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, highlighted the discomfort experienced by Nigerians, especially in the education sector. He assured that measures like the School Feeding Programme and Student Loan Scheme were implemented to support education.
Tinubu emphasized the commitment to higher education, mentioning the removal of higher institutions from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and advocating for autonomy in universities. He also outlined plans for the internationalization of the university system, encouraging foreign investors and universities to establish partnerships with Nigerian institutions.
The Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, highlighted the university’s progress, including significant research activities and grant income. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended UNILAG’s status as a leading educational institution and reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing education.
In a communique, the Catholic Bishops addressed various national issues, including the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, the security situation, and the rejection of blessing for same-sex marriages. They called for government initiatives to revive the economy, encourage entrepreneurship, and address environmental concerns.
The Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) urged President Tinubu to expedite action to cushion the effects of economic decisions and tackle insecurity. They emphasized the need for the President to employ all available resources to address the country’s challenges.
Overall, the leaders acknowledged the difficulties faced by Nigerians due to economic decisions but expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in building a prosperous and just nation.
