Idris highlighted that following the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, the initial proposal for a wage award to workers was set at N25,000 to mitigate the impact of the policy. However, this proposal faced rejection from labor unions. Subsequently, after extensive negotiations between the government and labor representatives, the wage award was increased to N35,000, which was paid over a six-month period.

The minister emphasized the necessity for Nigerians to be patient and allow President Tinubu the time to address the nation’s challenges, emphasizing the President’s commitment to improving the welfare and well-being of all citizens.

Idris explained, “Labour was not comfortable. We entered into negotiation with the labor, and after lengthy discussions with them and President Tinubu, we arrived at an agreement of N35,000, which was accepted. The president stated that the N35,000 would be paid for six months to mitigate the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy, spanning from September 2023 to February 2024.”

Looking ahead, Idris disclosed that in March, the government and labor will reconvene to discuss a new minimum wage for workers. He urged Nigerians to comprehend Tinubu’s intention to address the overall welfare and well-being of the populace, acknowledging the challenges ahead but expressing optimism that the country will ultimately benefit from these efforts. I want to call on Nigerians to give President Tinubu the time to make things right for the country,” he added.
