Profile of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights
The African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights is a judicial body established by African states to safeguard human and people’s rights across the continent. It complements the functions of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The Court consists of eleven judges nominated by member states of the African Union and elected by the AU Assembly of Heads of State and Government. Nigeria became a state party to the Protocol establishing the Court after ratifying it in 2004.
