The handover ceremony took place at INEC’s headquarters in Abuja during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs).
With the transition, Agbamuche-Mbu officially assumed duties as Acting INEC Chairman, pending President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of a substantive successor.
Meanwhile, speculations have intensified that Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN) — a renowned legal scholar and current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos — is being considered as Yakubu’s likely replacement.
Insiders further disclosed that President Tinubu sought the institutional advice of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, who once served as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Benue State from July 2017 to December 2021.
The source emphasized that Yilwatda, known for his fairness and professionalism, refrained from any action that could be perceived as political interference in the selection process, noting that he “was careful not to create any negative optics regarding the appointment of Yakubu’s successor.”
