The meeting, held just an hour before the scheduled resumption of negotiations between organized labor and the federal government, aimed to address the impasse over minimum wage adjustments and the demand to reverse increased electricity tariffs.

Present at the meeting were Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited, Melee Kyari.

This gathering is likely a response to the ongoing strike initiated by organized labor due to stalled negotiations on the new minimum wage, with labor previously rejecting the government’s proposed N60,000.

Following the strike’s impact, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, held discussions with NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero, TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, and other labor representatives, resulting in President Tinubu’s agreement to revise the minimum wage offer beyond N60,000.

As a result, negotiations under the Tripartite Committee resumed daily for one week to expedite talks on the new wage. Following the National Executive Council meeting at the Labour House, Abuja, where the decision to suspend the nationwide strike was made, organized labor announced the resumption of negotiations with the government.

Earlier, the National Assembly had engaged with organized labor, urging both parties to find common ground to resolve the standoff while emphasizing continued payment of the N35,000 wage until a new minimum wage is implemented.
