Edu emphasized that the new administration is committed to revisiting and refining the social register to ensure accuracy and relevance. The primary goal is to verify that the individuals listed in the document genuinely require the government’s financial assistance.

She stated, “Given that it’s a new administration, we’ll carefully examine the register and ensure that the intended beneficiaries align with our objectives.

We appreciate the previous efforts by the World Bank and the Office of the National Safety Net, yet we need to be meticulous in our approach due to the scrutiny from Nigerians. Accountability is crucial.”

President Bola Tinubu’s determination is to ensure that the interventions reach those genuinely in need. Edu noted that some state governors had expressed concerns, prompting the decision to undertake a thorough review.

“The social register will undergo thorough verification and updates. Individuals not meeting the criteria will be removed, while those who meet the eligibility criteria will be included.

Our commitment is to collaborate with state and local governments to establish an accurate social register for the nation,” Edu emphasized.

Edu also highlighted the importance of involving state and local governments in the registration process to enhance accuracy and transparency.

She noted that although some registrations were valid, the level of engagement from state and local governments was sometimes insufficient.

“We are determined to create a comprehensive and reliable register that can be effectively implemented, ensuring accountability to uplift genuinely disadvantaged individuals from poverty,” Edu added.
