2.ECOWAS Expulsion: The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has approved the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso from the regional bloc, effective January 29, 2025. However, the three nations have until July 2025 to reconsider their decision.

3.Navy Recruitment Drive: The Nigerian Navy has recruited 1,814 young Nigerians in the past six months to bolster military operations in the Northeast, Niger Delta, and Gulf of Guinea. The announcement was made by Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the Chief of Naval Staff, at the passing-out parade for Batch 36 trainees in Onne, Rivers State.

4.Dangote Refinery Exports: Dangote Petroleum Refinery has begun exporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), or petrol, to several countries, including Cameroon, Ghana, Angola, and South Africa. Dr. Devakumar Edwin, VP of Oil and Gas at Dangote Industries, made the announcement during a visit by Japan’s Business Community delegation.

5.Lagos Truck Accident: A tragic accident involving an articulated truck at PZ Junction, Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos, claimed the lives of three people, injured one, and left another missing. The accident, involving a truck carrying twin 20-foot containers, was attributed to reckless driving, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

6.NDLEA Drug Bust: The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) seized massive shipments of methamphetamine and a strong synthetic cannabis strain known as Loud at the Tincan Seaport in Lagos. The drugs were intended for distribution during the Christmas and New Year period.

7.Benue Boat Tragedy: The Benue State Police confirmed that 20 passengers were killed when a boat capsized on River Benue on Saturday. While 11 survivors were rescued, authorities are still searching for others who may be missing.

8.Fire Outbreak in Ibadan: A devastating fire broke out in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Sunday morning, destroying three shops. Prompt response from the state fire services prevented the blaze from damaging 13 other shops. The fire is believed to have started due to unattended refuse behind a branch of First City Monument Bank in Dugbe.

9.Agricultural Loans for Food Security: The Federal Government has secured over $600 million in agricultural loans for 2024 to support food security and rural development. A $134 million loan from the African Development Bank will enhance seed and grain production across Nigeria.

10.Petroleum Smuggling Seized: The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intercepted over 695,000 litres of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). This operation, carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, aims to combat the smuggling and diversion of petroleum products.
