Sule Audu, a former member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Agatu constituency, confirmed the incident in a phone interview with *Daily Trust*. He revealed that nine people, including the two soldiers, the village head of Egwuma, and six others, lost their lives in the attack.

Audu said, “The attack occurred between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Tuesday. The bandits entered Egwuma through the Akile axis, bypassing the area where soldiers were stationed, and opened fire on residents. They killed the village head, six others, and two soldiers, and took the soldiers’ weapons. One soldier was severely injured. The attackers retreated to the part of Agatu land they have been occupying, including villages like Ogwumogbo, Ejuma, Akile, Okpogbolo, Okpiye, and Echije. People had only returned to the area on Sunday after soldiers assured them of safety, but they were killed on Tuesday. The village had long been abandoned due to previous invasions by the bandits, who attack and retreat to the areas they control.”

Audu added that the attackers are suspected to have come from Nasarawa and Kogi states, where they have maintained a strong presence and have been terrorizing local communities.

Although soldiers had been effective in reducing past attacks, Audu stressed that the situation remains critical. When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Catherine Anene, stated that she had yet to receive a detailed report of the incident.
