At least two female students from Nasarawa State University, Keffi, tragically lost their lives in a stampede that erupted at the university’s convocation square on Friday. The stampede occurred during the distribution of palliatives by the Nasarawa State government.
According to a source within the university who spoke to PUNCH Online, the stampede resulted in the death of two female students due to suffocation amidst the chaotic crowd. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Confirming the incident, Yunusa Baduku, the National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association, expressed dismay over the situation, describing it as both uncalled for and heartbreaking. He recounted how the students overwhelmed security measures, breaching the gates to access the convocation square where the palliatives were being distributed.
Baduku further disclosed that many female students suffered injuries while others were suffocated by the overwhelming crowd. He reported being at the Federal Medical Center Keffi, where some injured students were receiving emergency treatment. Additionally, he confirmed the unfortunate death of one student but couldn’t provide an exact count of the injured due to the ongoing medical care in different facilities.
Despite the tragedy, Baduku commended the swift response of the university management, student leaders, and state government representatives in providing immediate medical assistance to the affected students. He highlighted their collaborative efforts to restore normalcy to the school environment amidst the challenging circumstances.
