He added that their efforts in showcasing Nigerian talent helped Afrobeats gain traction, eventually drawing support from platforms like BBC 1Xtra, whose DJs and presenters began spotlighting the genre. He further highlighted Afroswing’s role in standardizing African influences within British urban music.
Industry veterans, such as JJC of Big Brovaz fame, were recognized as early pioneers, forming groups like the 419 Squad to promote African sounds. The duo of Ayo Shonaiya and DJ Abass were credited with carving out spaces for African and Black diasporic music through live events and media platforms. Annual events, such as the Nigerian corner at the Notting Hill Carnival, became significant stages for Afrobeats performers in the UK.
