Umahi emphasized the ministry’s intention to ensure that contractors fulfill the contracts signed and maintain the roads by establishing these committees.
These committees will oversee the reconstruction of the Benin-Warri Dual Carriageway (Sections I, II, and III) and the dualization of East-West Road Section III, including the Port Harcourt (Eleme Junction) to Oone Port Junction road in Rivers.
He stated that the ministry’s directors had come to an agreement to establish task forces residing in these locations for efficient supervision.
They would also be responsible for adapting road designs to site conditions. Umahi noted that they had the legal right to redefine projects under section 51 of the General Conditions of the contract, allowing for project rescaling to improve quality and reduce hardship for the people. The reconstruction would involve using one-foot thick concrete for the road.
The Minister further mentioned that the Federal Government had identified the importance of the Benin-Warri and Eleme-Onne Port roads.
He highlighted that 260 projects, totaling N217 billion, requiring immediate intervention, had been submitted to the President for consideration. These projects stemmed from motions from the National Assembly, public concerns, and feedback from state controllers.
Regarding funding for these projects, Umahi informed that President Tinubu was dedicated to enhancing the nation’s road infrastructure. He also noted that funds had been approved for the rehabilitation of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos.
Umahi expressed concern over the failures in several sections of the East-West Road between Warri and Cross Rivers, which were experienced in the previous week.
