The memo, signed by Brigadier-General SO Okoigi, Acting Corp Commander Medical (CCM) of the Nigerian Army, revealed that the disease presented symptoms similar to malaria but led to complications such as abnormal liver function, acute kidney failure, encephalopathy, microangiopathy, and elevated D-Dimer levels.
In response to the situation, the Accident and Emergency (A&E) unit of the hospital has been temporarily closed for thorough disinfection, and samples from suspected contacts and the deceased have been sent to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) laboratory in Kano for analysis. Kaduna State epidemiologists have been called in to investigate the cause of the illness and prevent its spread.
The Nigerian Army, confirming the outbreak as an “acute Viral Hemorrhagic disease,” assured the public that relevant agencies have been contacted for collaboration. Major-General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, emphasized that there is no need for panic. Contact tracing has been initiated, and measures, including the enhancement of Infection Prevention Control (IPC) in military health care facilities, have been implemented to contain the suspected outbreak.
As a precautionary measure, the entire hospital facility is undergoing disinfection, and the Accident and Emergency ward of the 44 NARHK has been closed for fumigation. The Nigerian Army has extended its commitment to providing medical services to civilians in host communities, despite the setback caused by this unfortunate development. The public is urged not to panic, as the army assures transparency and collaboration with relevant stakeholders in accordance with international best practices.
