According to DAILY POST, the erosion has worsened significantly, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes. Persistent rainfall has aggravated the situation, making properties and infrastructure increasingly susceptible to flooding and collapse.
Yusuf Agalu, a local resident, described the severe impact of the erosion. He noted that every rainfall brings substantial flooding, damaging property and posing health risks. “Many people have been forced to move in with relatives because we can’t sleep through the nights when it rains. We constantly fear for the stability of our homes,” Agalu said.
He also pointed out that the community’s existing water channels, meant to alleviate flooding, are now contributing to the problem due to blockages from the erosion. Agalu urged the Nasarawa State Government to build effective drainage systems and include local residents in the planning and maintenance processes.
Another resident, Abdullahi Lamino, echoed these concerns, stressing the urgent need for government action to ensure the community’s safety and safeguard their livelihoods. “The erosion is making the flooding worse during the rainy season, creating dangerous conditions for us. We urgently need government support to address this crisis,” Lamino said.
Debbie Ekere shared her frustration, recalling how she had to instruct her family to let water flow through their rooms until morning due to the severity of the flooding. Community head Abubakar Ismaila also expressed deep concern about the erosion’s long-term effects. He criticized politicians for their broken promises to address the issue, noting that despite previous assurances, no significant action has been taken.
In response, Peter Ahemba, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on Public Affairs, acknowledged the erosion problem in Lafia. He explained that delays in addressing the issue are due to ongoing road construction and rehabilitation projects in the state capital. “We understand the difficulties faced by residents and are aware of the erosion challenges. However, our current focus is on road projects,” Ahemba said. He assured the community that their concerns are a priority for the government and urged them to remain hopeful for future resolutions.
