Habibu explained that the visit was part of the commission’s annual verification process, mandated by the constitution. The team’s responsibilities include assessing the party’s compliance with constitutional provisions, such as the minimum requirement of 24 members from different states and the FCT. They will also scrutinize the party’s organizational structure, office presence in Abuja, financial audits, and other relevant issues.

She emphasized the significance of the verification, noting that the last one took place in 2019, with disruptions in 2020 due to COVID-19 and subsequent activities in 2021 and 2022. Ganduje, in response, commended INEC for its effective handling of the electoral process despite challenges.

Addressing concerns about election violence, Ganduje asserted that blaming INEC for such incidents was misplaced, placing responsibility on politicians instead. He viewed the visit as historic and essential for strengthening the relationship between INEC and political parties, particularly the APC.

Ganduje highlighted the APC’s commitment to transparency, readiness to provide necessary information, and ongoing efforts to make the party ICT-compliant. He revealed initiatives such as e-registration of members and the establishment of the National Institute for Progressive Studies to enhance members’ understanding of democracy.

The report concludes by referencing Section 225 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which mandates political parties to publish statements of assets and liabilities, submit annual financial statements to INEC, and comply with the Commission’s directives on financial transactions records.
