Victory For Amusan! Nigerian Hurdles Queen Wins Brescia Race Ahead Of Diamond League Showdown

Former world record holder Tobi Amusan continued her preparations for the 2026 Diamond League Final with a victory in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Grand Prix Brescia in Italy on Sunday.

The Nigerian hurdler clocked 12.56 seconds to take first place despite facing a strong headwind of 1.7m/s.

American Alaysha Johnson finished second in 12.62 seconds, while Jamaica’s Ackera Nugent secured third place after posting 12.75 seconds.

Amusan’s victory came only days after she lost her women’s 100m hurdles world record to American Olympic champion Masai Russell at the Zurich Diamond League.

Russell clocked 12.09 seconds at the Letzigrund Stadium last Thursday to break Amusan’s previous world record of 12.12 seconds by 0.03 seconds.

Amusan finished second behind Russell in Zurich with a season-best time of 12.23 seconds.

The Nigerian had held the world record for four years after setting the 12.12-second mark during the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

She later won the final in 12.06 seconds, but the performance did not qualify as a world record because it was aided by a tailwind above the permitted limit.

Amusan will have another opportunity to face Russell at the Diamond League Final in Brussels, Belgium, scheduled to take place from September 4 to 5.

The Nigerian star is a three-time Diamond League champion, having claimed the title in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
