The incident, which took place in January, precedes FIJ’s recent undercover investigation exposing the collaboration between Customs officials and smugglers, shedding light on the rampant smuggling facilitated by corrupt practices within the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

FIJ’s groundbreaking investigation, titled ‘Undercover as a Smuggler’, has uncovered shocking revelations, prompting strong denials and dubious rebuttals from Dende and his associates. In response to FIJ’s expose, Dende vehemently denied involvement in smuggling, accusing FIJ of engaging in character assassination.

The controversy escalated when FIJ obtained video footage capturing Dende’s confrontation with a Customs officer identified as Rotimi. In the video, an enraged Dende can be heard issuing threats against Rotimi, invoking dire consequences upon him.

Despite Dende’s menacing demeanor and armed entourage, the Customs officers present attempted to defuse the situation, urging Dende to calm down.

Further investigation by FIJ revealed alarming details about the extensive network of corruption within the NCS, implicating high-ranking officials including Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi and Comptroller Hussein Ejigbunu.

The video exposes Dende’s brazen attempts to influence Customs operations to facilitate his smuggling activities, underscoring the pervasive culture of corruption within the agency.

Pleading Customs Officer: I will talk to him.

Scared Customs Officer: Oga, kini mo se? (Boss, what have I done?).

Dende: May your life be ruined, Rotimi. May it never be well with you, Rotimi. May it never be well with you, Rotimi. May it never be well with you, Rotimi.

Dende: Is he [Rotimi] the only one here? Is he the only Customs officer here?

Scared Customs Officer: What have I done? He is threatening to kill me. Why?

Concerned witness: Please, it’s okay. It’s okay, oga.

Dende: Look, Ejigbunu [Hussein Ejigbunu, Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit Zone A] is the one I called. Ejigbunu is the one I called; he [Rotimi] will regret being born. Ejigbunu bring it [the smuggled goods] in.”

Dende: Call Wale, call Wale [the CGC]. Ejigbunu, call Wale.

Concerned people: Alhaji, calm down nah.

Dende: You will regret it. You will find out that the teeth are sharper than the knife. I will show you that I am Dende.

Dende: I saw your boss’s trailer — four trailers that loaded rice — in Seme. What did you do about it? I will not accept it. I have told Ejigbunu I will not agree.
