France is witnessing widespread protests in major cities for the third consecutive night after a tragic incident involving the police shooting and death of a 17-year-old teenager of Algerian and Moroccan descent during a routine traffic stop. Over 400 individuals have been arrested across the country in connection with the demonstrations.

The violence initially erupted on Tuesday, June 27, when the police fatally shot the victim, identified as Nahel M, as he attempted to flee from the traffic stop. The situation escalated on Thursday night, June 29, with new incidents reported in Marseille, Lyon, Pau, Toulouse, and Lille. These incidents involved fires and protesters launching fireworks, prompting a response from the national police.

In the western suburb of Paris, Nanterre, where the teenager was killed, protesters set cars on fire, erected barricades, and engaged in clashes with the police following a peaceful vigil. Buildings and bus shelters were defaced with the words “Vengeance for Nahel,” and a bank was briefly set ablaze, but firefighters managed to extinguish the flames before they spread to nearby structures.

In central Paris, a Nike shoe store was looted, and windows were shattered along the Rue de Rivoli shopping street, according to Paris police.

Similar clashes were reported between young individuals and law enforcement officers in the Belgian capital, Brussels, where approximately 10 people were arrested on Thursday evening. Some public transport services in the city were temporarily disrupted. Images in Belgian media depicted a burning car and riot police officers in action, with tensions particularly high in Brussels’ central Anneessens district, as reported by the Belgian news agency Belga.
