The Federal Secretariat has been a central location for the ongoing protest, where demonstrators have been rallying against hunger and poor governance. The lack of intervention by over 20 police officers raises concerns about the protection of protest rights in Rivers State.
Rivers State Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has expressed concern over the incidents and pledged a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable and to prevent future occurrences.
Despite previous efforts to maintain order and support peaceful protests, including providing refreshments, the situation on Wednesday underscored significant challenges.
The nationwide protest, now in its seventh day, has seen increasing violence in some Northern states. The organizers of the #EndBadGovernance protest have declared their intention to continue despite security threats. Naija News reports that the federal government has appealed for protesters to return home, requesting more time to address the issues. However, the protesters remain firm in their demand for change before halting the demonstrations.
Ene Obi, former country director of Action Aid Nigeria, and Hauwa Mustapha, both involved in organizing the protest, affirmed their commitment to remain at Moshood Abiola Stadium until the conclusion of the 10-day protest.
