Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Issa-Onilu, a former spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), argued that calls from #EndBadGovernance protesters for the subsidy’s return are emotionally driven rather than economically sound. He asserted that reintroducing the subsidy would not alleviate poverty but rather exacerbate it.

Issa-Onilu advised Nigerians to focus on adapting to the subsidy removal and to support government efforts aimed at ensuring survival without it. He acknowledged the historical trust issues between the government and the public, emphasizing the need for the administration to demonstrate its commitment to fulfilling its promises.

He stated, “Demands to reinstate the subsidy are based on emotion, not economic logic. It won’t solve poverty; it will make it worse. Instead, we should concentrate on surviving without the subsidy and support the government’s initiatives to help us do so.”

Addressing information managers, Issa-Onilu added, “It is challenging to communicate with people who have been disappointed for years. Nigerians are skeptical and question whether new promises will be fulfilled. Therefore, we must show that this government is committed to keeping its promises.
