In a video shared by Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) journalist Isaac Haastrup, the victim is seen pleading for mercy and claiming hunger drove him to commit the act.

Following the incident, the Ijesa Sports Club announced the immediate suspension of Chief Ajibade, pending the outcome of a police investigation into allegations of attempted murder.

In a statement dated August 7, 2025, and signed by the club’s spokesperson, Hon. Kenneth Opebiyi, the organisation described the alleged conduct as both unacceptable and alarming.

“The Executive Committee of Ijesa Sports Club hereby announces the immediate suspension of Chief Gbenga Ajibade, pending the conclusion of investigations by law enforcement agencies into his alleged involvement in a serious case of attempted murder. This follows accusations that Chief Ajibade attempted to take the life of a fellow citizen over a maize theft allegation,” the statement read.

The club revealed that during an emergency meeting held on August 6, 2025, members expressed deep concern over disturbing footage circulating on social media, including Facebook, which they said could tarnish the club’s image.

The committee unanimously agreed to suspend Chief Ajibade until investigations are complete, after which he may face internal disciplinary measures for behaviour deemed unacceptable.

“The integrity and reputation of Ijesa Sports Club remain paramount,” the statement continued. “We cannot permit any member’s actions to bring disrepute to our organisation, which has been built over the years on respect and community values. It is imperative we act decisively to protect the club’s name, especially given the public association being drawn between Chief Ajibade and the club.

As a respected institution in Ijesaland, we condemn any conduct that endangers life or undermines human dignity. No individual is above the law, and we stand firmly for justice and accountability.”
