Labour Party Senator Urges Northern Politicians to Defer Presidential Ambitions Until 2031

Senator Neda Imasuen, representing Edo South in the National Assembly under the Labour Party (LP), has advised northern politicians to hold off on their presidential aspirations until 2031.

Speaking to journalists in Benin City, Imasuen explained that his recommendation is based on an unwritten agreement that informally rotates the presidency between the North and the South.

“At some point, there’s always consensus to allow the South complete its turn before power returns to the North,” he said. “That’s my perspective—it’s an arrangement that may not be documented, but it exists in practice.”

He added that although he personally disapproved of former President Muhammadu Buhari’s policies, the North and other regions allowed him to serve two full terms without opposition to the zoning principle.

“Buhari’s administration, in my view, achieved very little. Yet, everyone turned a blind eye and allowed him to complete his eight years. The same principle should apply to the current president,” he said.

Senator Imasuen, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, argued that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves the same opportunity to complete two terms in office, especially considering the bold steps he has taken in governance.

He specifically applauded Tinubu’s handling of the recently passed tax reform bill, praising the president’s unwavering commitment despite significant resistance.
