Speaking during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Wike said Bala Mohammed appealed for the convention to be delayed to allow ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party to progress, but he rejected the proposal.

According to Wike, politics is similar to football, where differences can be resolved if there is sincerity. He said efforts had been made to unite party members and address internal issues.

He recounted that Bala Mohammed had initially reached out through his aide, requesting a meeting after returning from Lagos. Although he was unavailable at the time, Wike said he later contacted the governor and scheduled a meeting.

Wike explained that the governor eventually visited him late at night, where they discussed the situation. During the meeting, Bala Mohammed asked whether the convention could be postponed to allow for further dialogue.

However, Wike said he declined, arguing that it would be inappropriate to reverse course after previous decisions and legal developments. He pointed out that earlier advice to delay the convention had been ignored and that a committee set up to address party issues had already made recommendations which were not followed.

He further noted that after proceeding with the convention, Bala Mohammed’s camp sought validation from a Federal High Court in Ibadan—an approach his own faction did not take.

Wike reiterated that while disagreements persist, reconciliation remains possible if all parties are willing to engage sincerely.
