Yemi Adaramodu, the spokesperson of the Nigerian Senate, has downplayed the significance of the newly formed political coalition that recently endorsed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 elections. Speaking to journalists, Adaramodu asserted that the individuals involved in the ADC coalition are familiar political figures who bring nothing new to the table.

“Who among them is new? Who has been newly introduced?” he asked rhetorically. “Why should we be concerned? These are the same people — whether from PDP, Labour Party, or APGA — just regrouping under a new name. We know them. We understand their strengths and weaknesses.”

Using a football metaphor, Adaramodu compared the situation to former Chelsea players joining Manchester United to face Manchester City. Despite the change of team, he argued, the players’ qualities remain unchanged.

He stressed that the coalition consists of old political actors from existing parties like the PDP and Labour Party, and that switching to the ADC does not present any credible threat to the APC in the 2027 polls.

“It’s the same players,” he said. “Unless there are new ‘signings’ from a different ‘transfer market,’ we don’t see any reason to be worried.”

Adaramodu, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, added that the emergence of the coalition serves as a source of comic relief in Nigeria’s political space.

“In the middle of serious political activity, we sometimes need a bit of comic relief. We need to laugh, relax, and ease the pressure. It’s good for our health — and for our democracy,” he remarked.

While clarifying that he does not view the coalition members as comedians, Adaramodu stated that their political moves are amusing.

“If someone who has been a governor, minister, or speaker for decades now claims to be hungry for power again, it’s a laughable situation — though that doesn’t necessarily make them a comedian,” he concluded.
