Italian transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed the real reason behind AC Milan’s decision to abandon their loan pursuit of Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface during the last transfer window.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Boniface, who eventually joined Werder Bremen on loan from Bayer Leverkusen, had already travelled to Milan and even completed medical tests before the Italian club suddenly pulled out of the deal.

Speaking to Milan Vibes, Di Marzio disclosed that Milan’s medical team raised red flags over the forward’s fitness after a thorough review. He explained that while the club was aware of Boniface’s previous injuries, they wanted full assurance about his current physical state before proceeding.

“Milan knew about Boniface’s physical issues. They weren’t ignorant of his medical history or career background. They just wanted to be absolutely certain about his condition, even though it was a loan deal,” Di Marzio said.

He added that Milan’s careful approach was standard practice, especially when dealing with players who have a history of injuries.

“Sometimes, when you spend €40 million on a player, their injury record becomes a major factor. But even for a loan, after assessing both past and present medical reports, Milan decided to go for someone who offered stronger guarantees,” he explained.

Di Marzio also defended the club’s decision to conduct the medicals in Italy, describing it as the most transparent way to handle such matters.

“It may not have looked ideal to bring the player in and send him back, but it was far more transparent than clubs that perform medicals abroad and keep quiet when deals collapse,” he noted.

He further hinted that Milan’s shifting transfer focus, possibly toward Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, might have influenced their final decision.

“Perhaps when the chance to sign Nkunku appeared, Milan felt he was a better fit for their present and future,” Di Marzio added.

The 24-year-old Boniface has since settled at Werder Bremen, making four substitute appearances in the Bundesliga and registering one assist in Bremen’s 4–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach as he works his way back to top form.
