During an event in Abuja commemorating his 59th birthday and Nigeria’s Independence Day, Abbas lamented the prevailing trend among politicians, wealthy businesspeople, and parents who prefer private schools for their children. He made these remarks while addressing students from selected primary and secondary schools.
In a statement from his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, Abbas attributed the decline of public schools to the rise of private institutions and inadequate teacher welfare. He reminisced about a time when private schools were virtually nonexistent, stating, “Everyone, including the Emir, the Commissioner, the Minister, and the wealthiest tycoon in town, sent their children to public schools, fostering a collective interest in their quality.”
Abbas pointed out that this collective concern ensured strict supervision of teachers and school operations, resulting in higher educational standards. He lamented that today, even government officials opt for private education, which has contributed to the declining standards in public schools.
He urged students to embrace hard work and avoid seeking shortcuts in life, emphasizing that diligence is key to achieving their ambitions. “You must cultivate a culture of hard work if you want your patriotism to positively influence Nigeria. The current generation often seeks quick success without following due process. Pay attention to details, believe in yourself, and work hard,” he advised.
Reflecting on his own journey, Abbas recounted how he surprised his father by announcing his decision to serve in the National Youth Service Corps without revealing his university studies, highlighting his self-motivation and desire for self-improvement.
The Speaker also emphasized the importance of unity among students, urging them to reject segregation based on ethnicity or religion and to strive for greatness as citizens of Nigeria. He said, “When you treat your neighbor as you would like to be treated, your patriotism will flourish. I see every Nigerian as one, regardless of gender or religion, and I believe character is essential for meaningful relationships.”
He concluded by encouraging the youth to work towards eliminating ethnic and religious biases to secure a brighter future for themselves and the nation.
