The absence of ambassadors in Nigeria’s 109 missions, 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates worldwide has raised questions as President Tinubu has yet to make the appointments.

In an interview with Premium Times, Dare explained that President Tinubu is being meticulous in selecting individuals for these roles due to their significant responsibilities. According to Dare, the president is focused on foreign policy and intends to make the appointments before the year’s end.

Dare emphasized that embassies and missions operate with more than just ambassadors at the helm. He stated, “An embassy is a structure, and the ambassador, whether a political appointee or a career diplomat, is not working in isolation. They have consul generals and various diplomats and foreign affairs staff who handle day-to-day operations. Even with the absence of an ambassador, essential diplomatic functions continue.”

While acknowledging that having an ambassador brings more clarity and direction, Dare assured that the president is in the process of making these appointments soon. He added, “The president has been deliberate because he knows that ambassadors will play a key role in his plan to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to Nigeria and connect the country to the global economy effectively.”

Dare concluded, “The president is ensuring that those appointed as ambassadors have the right credentials, whether as career diplomats or politicians, and that’s why the process has taken time. But I am confident these appointments will happen very soon, likely before the end of the year.”
