Former Attorney General and Oyo State Commissioner for Justice, Mutalubi Adebayo, SAN, has stated that senators do not require police escorts, emphasizing that only judges should be exempt from President Bola Tinubu’s directive withdrawing police personnel from Very Important Persons (VIPs).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Adebayo made the remarks while commenting on the President’s recent order directing the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to withdraw police officers assigned to VIPs and redeploy them to areas where they are more critically needed, particularly in the fight against terrorism.

Speaking on Arise News, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) argued that senators who feel insecure should consider private security firms rather than rely on public police protection.

“Senators should apply for private guards if they feel the need for security,” he said.

He stressed that the roles of lawmakers are not comparable to those of judges, who occupy a unique position that makes police protection mandatory.

“Senators cannot compare their work with that of judges. Some civil servants, even ministers, need escorts, but judges are in a special category. They’re more than VIPs. Police protection is compulsory for judges considering the nature of their duties. It’s essential for society,” Adebayo explained.

‘Senators Are Overreacting’
Adebayo also criticized what he described as an overreaction by some lawmakers to the policy, particularly targeting Senator Abdul Ningi.

“To me, Senator Abdul Ningi is taking this matter too far. I would say he’s a clown. What exactly are they doing in the Senate that requires police escorts?” Adebayo asked.

He added, “What do they do there—crack jokes, make easy money? They don’t need police escorts. If they feel insecure, they can hire private security. Are they trying to compare their roles with those of judges?”

Naija News reports that President Tinubu had earlier instructed the Inspector-General of Police to withdraw officers attached to VIPs nationwide and redeploy them to locations where they would be more useful, particularly in enhancing internal security and combating terrorism.

The directive, however, has prompted concerns from some senators, who argued that losing their police escorts could expose them to security risks and endanger their lives.
