**Background**
On July 13, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced via press statement the appointment of Dr. Mainasara Umar Kogo as the new Chairman of the CCT. Kogo, a distinguished lawyer and expert in law, security, economics, politics, and international diplomacy, was set to replace Justice Danladi Umar, whose tenure was still ongoing at the time of the announcement.
This appointment effectively ended Justice Umar’s term. Although President Tinubu did not provide a reason for Umar’s removal, he expressed expectations that Dr. Kogo would perform his duties with professionalism, integrity, and dedication to the nation.
**Justice Danladi Umar**
Justice Danladi Umar, born on August 19, 1971, in Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, Nigeria, was appointed as Acting Chairman of the CCT at the age of 36. Before his appointment, he served as a lawyer and Chief Magistrate in Bauchi State.
Umar officially became the substantive Chairman of the CCT on July 11, 2011, following the death of his predecessor, Justice Murtala Adebayo Sanni, on January 24, 2011. His appointment was preceded by screenings and recommendations from both the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) and the National Judicial Council (NJC) to then-President Goodluck Jonathan. He was sworn in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Aloysius A. I. Katsina-Alu, at the Supreme Court, alongside two other tribunal members, retired Justice Robert Isaac Ewa Odu and Barrister Atedze William Agwaza.
